When God Calls – Listening, Hearing and Responding
First Anniversary Celebration
“For I know the plans I have for you ,declare the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29.11)
It is exactly one year since my debut book – When God Calls – was published. How time has flown! I can vividly recall the process of producing the book, the long days and nights spent trapped to my laptop, the frequent meetings with my mentor and the trips to my publisher in Ely. It feels like yesterday. It was a curious mix of hard work and excitement.
I was expecting the pressure to ease once the manuscript makes it into print. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Writing the book and getting it published was only the beginning of the process. Like a new-born baby, the period after birth is every bit as challenging. Just as babies need lots of tender, loving care for healthy growth and development, a new book also needs a lot of attention and promotional work if it is to survive and succeed in an increasingly competitive market-place.
Writing has now been replaced with travelling and speaking. The past year has seen me hosting launch events on both sides of the Atlantic. From Nottingham and London to New York and Barbados; the book has kept me very busy giving radio and television interviews, making presentations, giving keynote addresses and carrying out book signings. I am humbled by the positive reception the book has had so far from readers from all walks of life. Since the past two months, I have been in my native Barbados on a book promotion tour. The response to the book here has surpassed my expectations.
When God Calls has already had a huge impact on many people’s lives. It has helped people to find or confirm their call; to manage distractions from their call; to learn to distinguish between God’s voice and other voices; and to find much-needed encouragement and inspiration in times of challenge. I am heartened by sale of the book so far and the number of five star reviews which it has attracted from readers. The following testimonial from one reader is typical of readers’ assessment of the book:
“I gave this book five stars because it serves as GREAT encouragement and inspiration for all of the things which sometimes creates doubt and uncertainty in our minds. The reader feels empowered as it addresses how to overcome those every day thoughts, which can sometimes leave us in a state of mental paralysis, indecision and confusion. The layout makes it conducive to easy reading. It is definitely a book which should be a personal copy, to be referenced at a glance (for a dose of positive reinforcement, when need be) even after it has been completely read. It feels like a personal conversation between the author and the reader. A short list of poignant questions, punctuates the end of each chapter, for further pondering and space, to make additional notes. An absolutely, Motivational piece of work!”.
